To convert M4A to MP3, open a converter, add the M4A file, choose MP3 with a bitrate of 192 kbps or higher, and save the new file. You can do it in your browser with the free M4A to MP3 Converter on WoowTools, which works on the file locally so nothing is uploaded, or with Apple Music and VLC if you prefer desktop software.
Below are all three methods, the settings that keep the sound clean, and fixes for the problems people hit most often.
M4A vs MP3: why convert at all?
M4A is an audio file inside an MPEG-4 container. Most M4A files hold AAC audio, which is what iPhones, Apple Music and many Android recorders produce. A smaller number hold Apple Lossless (ALAC).
AAC is actually a slightly more efficient codec than MP3: at the same bitrate it usually sounds as good or better. So the reason to convert is not quality. It is compatibility:
- Some car stereos, older MP3 players and USB speakers only read MP3.
- Many upload forms, school portals and podcast hosts list MP3 as the accepted format.
- Some editing and DJ apps on Windows handle MP3 more reliably than M4A.
| M4A (AAC) | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical source | iPhone Voice Memos, Apple Music, screen recorders | Downloads, podcasts, older libraries |
| Quality at 128 kbps | Very good | Good |
| Plays everywhere | Most modern devices | Practically every device |
| Best use | Storing and listening on Apple devices | Sharing, uploading, car stereos |
If every device you use already plays M4A, keep it. Convert when a player, app or form refuses the file.
Method 1: Convert M4A to MP3 in your browser (no upload)
This is the quickest route on any computer, Chromebook or phone with a modern browser.
- Open the M4A to MP3 Converter.
- Drop your M4A file on the box or click to choose it. The tool shows its duration, codec, channels and sample rate.
- Leave the format on MP3 and pick a bitrate: 192 kbps for music, 128 kbps for speech.
- Optional: type a start and end time to keep only part of the recording, or tick Mono for voice notes.
- Click Convert to MP3, play the preview, then click Download.
The conversion runs inside your browser tab, so the recording never leaves your device. That matters for voice memos, interviews and meeting recordings that you would rather not send to an unknown server.
Method 2: Apple Music or iTunes (Mac and Windows)
Apple's own app can create an MP3 copy of any M4A in your library.
- On a Mac, open Music, then Music > Settings > Files > Import Settings. On Windows, open iTunes and go to Edit > Preferences > General > Import Settings.
- Set Import Using to MP3 Encoder and choose Higher Quality (192 kbps) or a custom setting.
- Click OK, then select the songs in your library.
- Choose File > Convert > Create MP3 Version.
The MP3 copies appear next to the originals in your library. Remember to switch the import setting back to AAC if you rip CDs later.
Method 3: VLC media player (free, all desktops)
- Open VLC and choose Media > Convert / Save.
- Click Add, select the M4A file, then click Convert / Save.
- In Profile, pick the MP3 audio profile. Use the wrench icon to set the bitrate if you want more than the default.
- Choose a destination file name ending in .mp3 and click Start.
VLC is handy for batches on a desktop, but the settings are buried and it is easy to save over the wrong file name.
Which bitrate should you choose?
Going from AAC to MP3 is a lossy to lossy conversion, so you cannot add quality back. The goal is to lose as little as possible. A simple rule: pick an MP3 bitrate at least as high as the M4A's bitrate, and a step higher for music.
| Use | MP3 bitrate | Size per minute (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Voice memos, lectures, podcasts | 128 kbps (mono is fine) | 0.96 MB |
| Music for everyday listening | 192 kbps | 1.44 MB |
| Music you care about, DJ sets | 256 to 320 kbps | 1.9 to 2.4 MB |
The size figures follow directly from the bitrate (bits per second divided by 8, times 60). Going above 320 kbps is not possible in MP3, and going higher than the source rarely makes an audible difference.
How to convert iPhone voice memos to MP3
The iPhone Voice Memos app saves every recording as an M4A file. To turn one into an MP3:
- In Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the three dots and choose Save to Files (or Share and send it to your computer).
- On the iPhone itself, open the M4A to MP3 Converter in Safari, tap the drop area and pick the file from Files.
- Choose 128 kbps and Mono, convert and download. The MP3 lands in your Downloads folder in Files.
For speech, mono at 128 kbps halves the size compared with stereo at the same quality, which helps when an email or form has an upload limit.
Common problems and fixes
- "This file cannot be converted": older iTunes Store purchases were protected (they end in .m4p, not .m4a). Protected files cannot be converted by any honest tool. Songs bought after 2009 are usually unprotected.
- Apple Lossless files: some browsers cannot decode ALAC. Use the Apple Music method for those, or convert them to WAV first.
- The MP3 sounds worse: the source was probably a low bitrate already. Converting at 320 kbps will not fix it; use the highest quality original you have.
- Only part of the file is needed: use the trim fields in the browser tool, or browse the other audio and video tools on WoowTools, instead of converting the whole recording.
- The audio is inside a video: use MP4 to MP3 to pull the soundtrack out of a video, as described in our guide on how to convert MP4 to MP3.
Quick checklist
- Check whether you really need MP3; M4A plays almost everywhere today.
- Pick 192 kbps for music and 128 kbps mono for speech.
- Trim silence before converting to save space.
- Keep the original M4A until you have checked the MP3.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting M4A to MP3 lose quality?
A little, because both formats are lossy and the audio is encoded again. At 192 kbps or higher most people cannot hear the difference for music, and 128 kbps is plenty for speech. Always convert from the original file, not from an earlier converted copy.
Is M4A better than MP3?
At the same bitrate, M4A with AAC audio usually sounds slightly better than MP3, and the files are similar in size. MP3 wins on compatibility: it plays on practically every device, app and website. Convert only when something refuses the M4A file.
How do I convert M4A to MP3 on iPhone?
Save the recording to the Files app, open a browser converter such as the WoowTools M4A to MP3 Converter in Safari, pick the file and download the MP3. The conversion runs on the phone, so the file is not uploaded.
Can I convert M4A to MP3 without software?
Yes. A browser based converter needs no install: open the page, add the file, choose MP3 and download. WoowTools does the conversion inside the browser tab, so it also works offline once the page has loaded.
Why will my M4A file not convert?
The most common reasons are copy protection (old iTunes purchases ending in .m4p), Apple Lossless audio that the browser cannot decode, or a damaged file. Try playing the file first; if it does not play, it will not convert.
